Contemporary Rustic may sound like a contradiction in terms, but you'll understand the term when you see the Black Dog cabin with modern styling. It expands on image we think when we hear "cabin." Black Dog is set on 13 private acres on the northern side of Ashe County, and if peace and quiet is what you want, you'll enjoy this home's wooded acreage. With luck, you'll spot deer or turkey and a multitude of birds and perhaps a raccoon. You can hike or take it all in from a comfortable seat on the spacious decking surrounding the house. Inside, the vaulted wood ceilings enhance the mountain feeling, and lots of windows flood the Black Dog with light and make sure the outdoors is a part of your day no matter what the weather.
You'll enter through the foyer, and immediately want to look up and take in the space. In the sun-filled living room, a bank of windows along one wall with sliding doors along the other bring nature inside. Relax here in the morning, or on the deck beyond, or chill in the evening with a movie on the comfy leather furniture. Speaking of chilly, during the cooler seasons you'll love the warmth of a fire in the brick fireplace.[Firewood is not provided.]
The kitchen offers everything you'll need, with plenty of counter space for preparing your meals. From the window at the kitchen sink, get a view of the surrounding woods, and are only steps away from a gas grill.
The dining room overlooks the porch and woods beyond through large sliding doors. Nature is a key element of this home's design.
Black Dog offers one floor living, so regardless of age or physical ability, your friends and family can enjoy a visit to the mountains. The master bedroom offers a good night's rest in a queen-size bed, and the adjoining bath has double vanities and a tub/shower combination. The other two bedrooms have comfy double beds, and share a bath.
The cabin has a dedicated laundry room with a utility sink, perfect for longer stays. .
Location, Location, Location.
The Black Dog is located in the perfect spot for someone who wants to explore the area's best fishing spots, being close the famous Helton Creek. From this location, it's only 30 minutes to the outstanding Grayson Highlands State Park, where wild ponies will greet you up on the Massie Gap Trail - if you're there in the spring you might see the foals. Great hiking, and a replica of a historic mountain settlement, an interesting exhibit of the history of the area and more.
And not too far from Grayson Highlands is Damascus, Virginia, a quaint mountain town that is in the middle of the Virginia Creeper Trail, famed for bicycling (you can rent them there, and get a shuttle ride to White Top), walking and horseback riding along the old railroad bed, crossing trestles over one of the most beautiful creeks around.
West Jefferson is less than 30 minutes away, and once there you'll enjoy a stroll through all our great shops, galleries and restaurants. You are the same distance away from the New River Outfitters if you want to enjoy some time on the river in a kayak, canoe or inner tube.
We are lucky to have Molley Chomper Hard Cidery in Lansing, less than 15 minutes away, where you can do a taste testing of the large variety of flavors on offer. Close by to the cider mill is Pie On the Mountain, known for their great pizza. It's just across the road from the Lansing Creeper Park with a walking trail and monthly Music in the Barn concerts.
Of course, you might not want to go anywhere. If so, you've picked an ideal spot to get away from it all.
The Black Dog is pet friendly with a $50/per dog pet fee.

"Imagine driving up to a private and well appointed home in a naturally wooded environment. Then enter a very simple yet elegant home, a cozy fireplace, amazing beds and a wonderful bathroom. You will not
want to leave either. Add in the warmth and attentiveness of the owner and well as I said don’t make us leave. I am not finished yet though! This home is next to Greyson Park(outstanding) cute West Jefferson and booming Boone. Do not miss the opportunity to spend time in a wonderful home in a very natural place.
"We were seeking peace and togetherness with nature , away from the city noise and we found it in this cabin."
"We stayed at the Black Dog the weekend before Thanksgiving in order to go a Choose & Cut to pick out our tree. We loved the peaceful, solitude of the Black Dog Cabin. Our other favorite perks were the wood-burning fireplace, the remodeled bathrooms and kitchen and the privateness of the place. This was a perfect to stay if you have any anglers interested in fishing. Helton Creek was popping with fly fishermen and a great place to explore. Would stay here again!"
"We had the pleasure of staying at Black Dog recently . The space is peaceful and accommodating. It is private with natural views. We thoroughly enjoyed this lovely home and the calming aesthetic!! "
"The cabin is definitely on the road less traveled but such a serene and lovely place. Don’t be nervous about the off the path road it’s easy to navigate even in the snow. We enjoyed all the comforts of modern day life and the gorgeous quiet of this little retreat! Would highly recommend. Our kiddos enjoyed the snow fall and built some fun sled runs amongst the gorgeous trees. The small town of West Jefferson is close by and worth the trip. Overall we would highly recommend this property. "
"The pictures do not do it justice. It was just big enough for us and our pups but small enough for it to be cozy and romantic. We wish we had another day to just stay in and enjoy the cabin. We enjoyed our morning coffee on the deck as the dogs explored near by. The house had everything you would think you might need should you want to cook, start a fire, or blow dry your hair. The property seemed to be new or just very well kept. Loved the layout and the decor, I could definitely live here. I loved the large window at the front of the property, we watched deer coming through in the mornings and go over the ridge. They are so much bigger than I imagined. We went into West Jefferson for groceries and breakfast. Cute little town, make sure to check out The Vintage Farmhouse which is across the street from a great local breakfast spot, Sweet Louise's Cafe. If you're up for some good food and fun convo head over to Piney Creek and check out Red Dog Bistro(about 25) min away. The road up to the property can be slippery so make sure you have 4WD. Other than that get ready to enjoy your stay! "
